Location: Acacia Bay, Taupō

Industry: Residential

Installer: Solar Hub NZ Limited

System Installed: 12.29 kW Solar + 15.6 kWh Battery Storage

This modern home in Acacia Bay, Taupō, made the switch to solar to reduce rising electricity bills and gain long-term energy independence. With annual power usage of around 12,551 kWh, the homeowner wanted a system that could fully offset their electricity consumption while taking advantage of Taupō’s excellent solar conditions.

Solar Hub NZ designed a high-performance solar and battery system capable of generating more energy than the household uses over a full year.

The Challenge: Designing Solar for a Multi-Roof Home

The property features a complex roof layout with multiple gables and a mix of east- and west-facing roof sections. This meant the solar design needed to:

  • Capture sunlight from early morning through late afternoon

  • Stay within the local 5 kW grid export limit

  • Integrate with a three-phase power supply

  • Maximise self-consumption using battery storage

  • Remain future-ready for EV charging and electrification

A one-size-fits-all system wouldn’t deliver the best results — a tailored solution was essential.

The Solar Hub Solution

Solar Hub NZ engineered a customised solar and battery system that made full use of the available roof space while meeting all network and performance requirements.

System Overview

Solar System Size: 12.29 kW

Solar Panels:

  • 27 × JA Solar 455 W panels

  • Total module capacity of 12.3 kW

  • Panels distributed across east- and west-facing roof planes to smooth generation throughout the day

Hybrid Inverter:

  • 12 kW Deye three-phase hybrid inverter

  • Manages solar production, battery charging, and grid export intelligently

Battery Storage:

  • 15.6 kWh Micromall lithium-ion battery

  • Stores excess solar during the day for use in the evening and overnight

Solar Results & Energy Savings

The completed system transforms the home into a small residential power station.

Estimated Annual Electricity Bill Savings: Over $4,000

Projected Electricity Bill Savings Over 25 Years: $145,000

Projected Lifetime Net Savings: $115,600

Projected Energy Performance:

  • 107% grid consumption offset

  • 35% self-consumed on site

  • 58% exported to the grid (export-limited to meet network rules)

The system delivers a simple payback period of approximately 6 years and 7 months, with strong long-term financial returns.

Environmental Impact of Going Solar

By switching to solar power, this Taupō home is expected to achieve:

  • Around 2 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided every year

  • The equivalent of 144,500 km of car travel avoided over the system’s lifetime

  • Comparable to planting approximately 295 trees
